This is a 57 second 3d animated short that I created as part of a portfolio. At the time I was looking to get back into computer gaming and this was the centerpiece of said portfolio.

I did all of the 3d modeling and animation with 3D Studio 1.2, totally stock, without any additional plugins. As a result, I didn't have the luxury of inverse kinematics and animating the spider was incredibly time-intensive.

All of the textures were created in PhotoShop 4.0. I rendered out all of the animation to .tif files and then using Debabelizer created quickTime movies for each of the scenes. Then using SoundEdit created all of the sounds and then composited it all in Premiere 4.1.

At the time, I was doing the compositing on a Mac 8100AV and because of the current generation of video cards I was limited to 320x240, and was only able to get it to run decently at that resolution with some very careful compression, framerate, and keyframing configurations.

Doing something like this today would be an absolute snap, and getting a 640x480, millions of colors video with minimal compression to run on most machines would be no problem.

This is an .avi file of the animation. It is 320x240, full sound at 15fps. (15.3 MB)

Any 3d project entails a good bit of planning and sketching before the first polygons are manipulated. Here are just a few of the sketches that I did for the models in this project.

Texture maps are perhaps the most important part of 3d art; being able to create good maps gives your models character and detail that is often too resource intensive or time consuming to model. Here are some samples of the textures used in this animation.
